Natural product (Polygain™) inhibits parasite responsible for Coccidiosis, a disease ravaging the poultry industry

Summary

  • Polygain significantly reduced the number of viable parasites across the most common six coccidia species

  • For each species, Polygain performed in line with the antibiotic salinomycin

  • Results published in the International Journal of Parasitology: Drugs and Drug Resistance https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ijpddr.2021.07.001

Background

Ionophore antibiotics, such as salinomycin are often used to control coccidiosis. There is a strong community desire to move away from antibiotics in the food supply chain so alternative treatment options are being investigated.

Trial Design

The six most common species of Coccidia were incubated in RPMI nutrient media for 14 hours at 37°C.

The experiment used three groups:

  • Control, 2000µl RPMI nutrient media

  • 20µl Polygain™ and 1980µl RPMI nutrient media.

  • 20µl Salinomycin and 1980 RPMI nutrient media.

Results

The chart below shows that Polygain performed as well as Salinomycin (a widespread anticoccidial drug). The Number of Eimeria sporozoites in all six species was lower in both Polygain and Salinomycin versus control.

Number of Eimeria sporozoites after 14 hours incubation at 37°C. ***= highly statistically significant, P<0.001. N.S= No statistically significant difference.

This trial has been published “In vitro inhibitory activities of sugarcane extract on avian Eimeria sporozoites” in the International Journal of Parasitology: Drugs and Drug Resistance https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ijpddr.2021.07.001
